Guested on the Headphone Magicast run by @robmoller - who I appreciate for taking a chance on a very weird one with an elaborate backstory. Here it goes:

'About six months ago I picked up a green record at a small art and vintage gallery in Pimlico. On the back of the sleeve I read that it was the culmination of a two day workshop focused on the exploration of hip-hop. The twist: The workshop happened at ETAT, a community group for the elderly.

The gallery was full with locals celebrating the opening of its latest art exhibition. As I went up to pay, someone shouted: 'Thats my record!'. A bubbly lady, probably in her 70s walked up to me and took the record out of my hand to proclaim to everyone in the small room: 'This is my record! I'm a rapper!'

This mix is inspired by a chance encounter with a chance piece of art. The record is a loose collage of even looser interpretations of hip-hop. It was the perfect start, middle and end point to explore my own - very loose - interpretation of the genre.'

😉 I am a bit proud of this one... It’s a percussion heavy collage of jazz, folk and some kraut featuring tracks of Tara Clerkin Trio, Kulku and Kahil El’Zabar. I saw each of them individually over the past 2 years or so and they have been my favourite gigs since I moved to London.

🙏 One day I hope to see all of them together. For now, this mix does just that.

This episode is part of a special exchange between RTM.FM and Berlin-based Cashmere Radio. It is a mixtape of conscious music, touching on genres of afro reggae, hip hop, ragga and soca interspersed with vignettes from ’The London Record’, which in itself is a collage of field recordings, score and narration, portraying life in the capital.

The London Record was first released in 1961, right at the end of Empire, when former colonies were declaring their independence left and right. I thought it would be an interesting side by side to have this image that London (Empire) wanted to put out into the world next to songs of liberation. 

Mind over matter over distance – two radio stations merge for one day to bring you a glimpse of the other side.

‚Das Lebendige Radio‘ is back on @rtm.fm with my first mix of 2023. It’s made up of a few records I picked up in Germany over the holidays, recent finds from the past couple of weekends and re-discoveries that I had forgotten about.

The whole thing starts off with a lovely track from Garagen Uwe’s latest album on beatbude records. Next up is an edit from the @commonedit series by Dane. Followed by a few more experimental NDW tracks and a song from probably the album I listened to most over the past months. It’s from a brilliant affirmations-meets-synth-pop-project called Will Powers and is aptly called ‚Dancing for mental health’ 🕺💃 We also got an MJ lovers rock cover and one of the OG Project Pablo tracks in the mix. But…. Most important of all! I finally managed to play one of the Terrasolare releases. Thanks Lorenzo for putting out such lovely music!

Das Lebendige Radio is back on the airwaves with its 15th episode. Prompted by a recent discovery of German indie/punk seven inches at a south east London record shop, the episode is a mix of Neue Deutsche Welle, Punk and kraut-y synth stuff. The whole thing should feel like one of these 80s newcomer compilations that brought together bands with so many different styles.

It all begins with what sounds like the German version of legendary post-rock band Slint, then heads into some silly cod reggae and punk love songs, takes a kosmische synth detour and culminates in a Peruvian cover of an absolute minimal synth classic. Oh and don’t forget the rogue Welsh rave track in there that qualified because of its Kraftwerk feel. Shout out to my dad on this mix as a couple of records come from his old collection :) Enjoy the ride!

After accidentally skipping the one year anniversary, Das Lebendige Radio is back with its 14th episode. Since moving to London in 2018 I have grown to love the Caribbean sounds of reggae, dancehall, ragga, dub, etc pp. This mix brings together my latest finds, starting off with a version that sounds like elevator jazz, via a couple of dancehall b-sides towards a love song that combines rap and R&B elements to praise who else but Jah. Towards the end of the mix the lyrics reach a higher consciousness until it all gets a bit too silly. Hope you enjoy this one, there is more like this coming your way!

This episode of ‘Das Lebendige Radio’ is another mixed bag full of sonic oddities. The show starts off mellow with an odd new wave 7” and a digi dub tune courtesy of Lorenzo's Record Shop in Brockley (formerly Peckham). Then there are a couple more dubby instrumentals and later you can hear my favourite fashion-themed Euro-House tune featuring 90s German model and porn star Sybille Rauch - incl the obligatory Kraftwerk homage. There is even a breakbeat tune that I found at Hilly Fields Fayre the other weekend.

Burger-Highlife has nothing to do with McDonalds but everything with the German word for citizen (=Bürger) and the original genre of Ghanaian popular music (=Highlife). Mainly recorded by West-African immigrants to Germany, but also other countries around Europe, it is truly beautiful music, that will get you out of your lockdown rut.
